KIRKMAN BROADCASTING Talk WQSC-A (REAL 1340)/CHARLESTON host ANDY THOMAS exits, and the CHARLESTON POST AND COURIER reports that THOMAS says he was fired for concentrating too much on the arts.
THOMAS told the paper that owner GIL KIRKMAN fired him FRIDAY and "told me he didn't like my arts-related interviews or my culinary interviews, like the one with CHARLESTON cookbook author NATHALIE DUPREE... GIL wanted me to do more controversial subjects like politics and make the program about me, but I wanted to make it about the movers and shakers in CHARLESTON." Recent interviews included long-form talks with CHARLESTON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA Music Dir. DAVID STAHL, CHARLESTON BALLET THEATRE Resident Choreographer JILL EATHORNE BAHR, and other arts leaders, as well as Governor MARK SANFORD.
KIRKMAN denied that THOMAS was fired for talking about the arts, but told the paper, "I like ANDY. He's a nice guy, but I needed him to do certain things and he didn't want to do them, and so this was his choice."
