Sportscaster Charlie Jones Dead

Condolences to family and friends of longtime sportscaster CHARLIE JONES, who died THURSDAY of a heart attack in LA JOLLA, CA at 77.  He was four days shy of his 54th wedding anniversary. 

JONES, a native of FORT SMITH, AR, was best known as a network TV football announcer, covering AFL games for ABC in 1960-64 and NBC in 1965-69, then NFL games from 1970 through 1997. He also covered the OLYMPICS and WIMBLEDON and served as play-by-play voice of the CINCINNATI REDS on WLWT (TV)/CINCINNATI in 1973-74 and the COLORADO ROCKIES on KWGN-TV/DENVER in 1993-95. 

JONES started his career at KNAC-TV (now KFSM-TV)/FORT SMITH in 1956 and served as Sports Director of KFPW-A/FORT SMITH in 1957-59, then serving as Director of TV and Radio for the AFL's DALLAS TEXANS in 1960 while also doing play-by-play for national telecasts on ABC.
