COX/GREENVILLE GM STEVE SINICROPI tells ALL ACCESS about a close call at Urban WJMZ (107.3 JAMZ). "On FRIDAY the 13th just before 5p there was a fire at the 107.3 JAMZ tower site. The cause of the event was a bird that shorted out the center phase of the incoming power. The bird quickly caught fire and fell from the tower into the field, setting the field ablaze. The fire caused a short in the main transmitter causing the backup to kick on and call engineering. Engineer TREY COOPER was called to the smoke cloaked transmitter site. TREY falling back to his boy scout training grabbed the transmitter site water hose to keep the flames at bay while dialing 911."
"The PIERCETON Volunteer FD and SC Forestry arrived on the scene and extinguished the blaze. At one point there were 9 fire trucks. All that remained of the bird that caused it all is one foot. 107.3 JAMZ is now challenging sister station HOT 98.1 for 'hottest station in the Upstate.'"
