RADIOCRUNCH Pres. ANTHONY ACAMPORA starts his SPRING 2008 book analysis from the road where he's gotten a hold of the final diary ratings books for NEW YORK and LOS ANGELES. Both markets are headed for PPM currency and this is the final ratings period with the diary data.
New York: Z100, WRKS Share Lead; CBS Shut Out Of Top 10; WRXP Slow
EMMIS got mixed results in the SPRING book. With the flip of Smooth AC WQCD (CD 101.9) to AAA WRXP, EMMIS saw quite a bit of the disenfranchised audience head over to Urban AC sister WRKS -- which surged to #1 12+ and also leaped from 7th to 1st 25-54. However, the new AAA approach on WRXP -- tied for 22nd 25-54 -- dropping 62% in share from WQCD's Spring 2007 performance. In addition, CBS was shut out of the top 10 with both 18-49 and 25-54 adults -- although we might expect stronger results in the meter for some for their properties.
CLEAR CHANNEL Top 40 WHTZ (Z100) was the market leader among adults 18-34 and 18-49 yet again, while ranking 4th with adults 25-54. The other big winner this week was UNIVISION Tropical WCAA -- which thanks to new morning man LUIS JIMENEZ has soared all the way into the top 5 18-34 and 18-49, and #6 25-54.
25-54: As mentioned, WRKS was #1 as they dethroned INNER CITY Urban AC rival WBLS, who tied for 2nd with SBS Tropical WSKQ. Z100 was 4th. CLEAR CHANNEL watched AC WLTW slide from 2nd to 5th, with WCAA moving from 9th to 6th. CLEAR CHANNEL Classic Rock WAXQ moves from 4th to 7th. SBS Spanish Contemporary WPAT dips from 6th to 8th, with CLEAR CHANNEL Rhythmic AC WKTU 9th. Climbing into 10th place (up from 12th) is CITADEL Hot AC WPLJ.
CBS saw Classic Hits WCBS-F slide to 11th place, tied with News WINS. Sister AC WWFS (FRESH 102.7) rises from 15th to 13th and cut WLTW's lead in the AC race down a full share. EMMIS Rhythmic WQHT dips from 12th to 14th. CBS Sports WFAN and CLEAR CHANNEL Urban WWPR tie for 15th. CITADEL Talk WABC, CBS Rock WXRK, CBS News WCBS-A, and UNIVISION Spanish News/Talk WADO round out the top 20.
18-49: Z100 was off in share but held the top spot yet again. WSKQ moves from 3rd to 2nd. EMMIS sees WQHT and WRKS tie for 3rd in this important demo with WBLS finishing 5th (tied with WCAA). WPAT and WWPR are tied for 7th, while CLEAR CHANNEL watches WLTW and WKTU tie for 9th.
WAXQ and WPLJ are tied for 11th. WWFS grows a half share, but slides from 12th to 13th and was the highest rated station for CBS 18-49. WINS and WXRK tie for 14th, with WCBS-FM 16th in this important demo. WFAN is 17th, WABC 18th, WQBU 19th, and WCBS-AM 20th.
18-34: Z100 was the leader -- although HOT 97 closed the gap a bit. WWPR holds in 3rd place. WSKQ holds in 4th, with WCAA climbing into the top 5. WBLS slides from 5th to 6th. WKTU rises from 8th to 7th, with WPAT-FM dropping for 7th to 8th. WRKS is 9th, while WLTW and WXRK tie for 10th.
Los Angeles: L.A. Loves "K-Love"; Power Wins 18-34; Sound Nearly Silent
While Spanish-language stations will no longer be atop the LOS ANGELES ratings when PPM is delivered, UNIVISION stations are expected to continue to be among the market leaders. In the final diary book, UNIVISION Spanish Contemporary KLVE held on to the top spot with adults 25-54 for a second straight book and the top spot 18-49 for a fourth straight time. EMMIS was the champ 18-34, with Rhythmic KPWR (POWER 106) the leader there. Expect a lot of these key rankers to change once PPM data goes current in SEPTEMBER.Back to 25-54, UNIVISION Regional Mexican KSCA and LIBERMAN rival KBUE held on to 2nd and 3rd place respectively. SBS saw their Regional Mexican outlet, KLAX, move from 5th to 4th, giving Spanish stations the top four spots. The #1 English station is none other than CLEAR CHANNEL Top 40 KIIS, which was 5th. UNIVISION Spanish Adult Hits KRCD climbs from 8th to 6th. CLEAR CHANNEL AC KOST was 7th, while CBS Alternative KROQ climbed from 11th to 8th. The demise of RADIO ONE Urban AC KRBV at the start of the Spring book saw much of their audience apparently go to CLEAR CHANNEL Rhythmic AC KHHT (HOT 92.3). KHHT vaults from 13th to 9th and leaped for a fourth straight book. KPWR and CBS Smooth AC KTWV tied for 10th.
An off book for CBS Adult Hits KCBS-F (JACK-FM), which slips from 6th to 12th, tying them with CITADEL Classic Rock KLOS and CLEAR CHANNEL Talk KFI. CBS Classic Hits KRTH (which will boom with PPM) is now 15th. CLEAR CHANNEL Hot AC KBIG (104-3 MY-FM) climbed from 17th to 16th. ENTRAVISION Spanish Contemporary KSSE, CBS Talk KLSX, and MT. WILSON Country KKGO all tie for 17th. CLEAR CHANNEL Alternative KYSR climbs from 21st to 20th.
The exit of KRBV from the Urban market did not help TAXI Urban AC KJLH or MAGIC Urban KDAY. KJLH dropped from 19th to 23rd, while KDAY slid from 26th to 34th 25-54.
Despite a massive outdoor campaign (one of the largest in recent memory in LOS ANGELES), BONNEVILLE AAA KSWD (100.3 THE SOUND) debuted in 28th place 25-54 -- below the ranking of the previous Urban AC format.
18-49: KLVE was a dominant #1 with KSCA coming in 2nd. KIIS held in 3rd place, just ahead of KPWR. KBUE slid from 2nd to 5th. KROQ held in sixth, but saw a sizeable share increase. KLAX held in 7th. KHHT motors from 10th to 8th, with KRCD remaining 9th. KOST rounds out the top 10.
SBS Latin Urban KXOL was 11th, with KCBS-FM dropping to 12th. KSSE, KBIG, and KLOS all tied for 13th. KYSR saw some growth 18-49, where they moved from 20th to 16th, tying them with KFI and KTWV. KRTH was 19th, while KLSX slides from 14th to 20th. KSWD was 31st in this demo.
18-34: KPWR holds the leadership position here, edging out KLVE, who rises from 4th to 2nd. KIIS climbs almost a full share, but it slides in rank from 2nd to 3rd. KROQ moves from 6th to 4th, with KSCA 5th. KBUE drops from 3rd to 6th. KXOL holds in 7th with sister KLAX 8th. KHHT is 9th, with KSSE 10th.
A nice move 18-34 for KYSR, leaping from 16th to 11th with a 50% share increase. KRCD was 12th, with KOST and KBIG tied for 13th. KLSX rounds out the top 15.
