FCC OKs WONX Power Increase

The FCC has granted KOVAS COMMUNICATIONS' application to increase the power of its Ethnic WONX-A/EVANSTON, IL to double its daytime power to 7,000 watts, subject to the surrender of its license for second-adjacent-channel WMCW-A/HARVARD, IL, which went silent in MAY. The new signal for WONX gives it more CHICAGO market coverage; TIM DISA's AIR-TIME MEDIA will broker the sale of the station with the upgrade.

The FCC has also denied WILLIAM B. CLAY's objection to SUNBURST MEDIA - LOUISIANA's changing of the community of license of KCIL/HOUMA, LA to JEAN LAFITTE, LA, just south of NEW ORLEANS. CLAY contended that JEAN LAFITTE is too small to be a community of license, is smaller than "at least 40 other communities" he felt were more deserving, and that SUNBURST had not committed to serve JEAN LAFITTE. The Commission noted that CLAY, a CHARLOTTE resident, lacks standing to be a petitioner in this case, and also rejected his arguments on substantive grounds.

In another case, the Commission granted UNIVISION RADIO PUERTO RICO, INC.'s application to change frequencies for its Spanish Hits WUKQ-F (KQ-105, simulcasting WKAQ-F/SAN JUAN)/MAYAGUEZ, PR from 99.1 to 98.7 FM. The move is part of a long-delayed multi-station frequency change adopted in 1995 ; UNIVISION filed its application eight years after the proceeding became final, but the Commission granted the application anyway, with the condition that the change be completed within six months.

The Commission also denied BARRY P. LUNDERVILLE's appeal of the dismissal of his application for a new AM at KEARSARGE, NH. THe application had been denied because KEARSARGE, an unincorporated community, was found not to be a licenseable community.
