ABC affiliate WHAS-TV/LOUISVILLE's KIRBY ADAMS reports that former RADIO ONE Top 40 WDJX/LOUISVILLE Promotions Dir. TODD KELLY, who resigned his job last week, is being investigated for possible fraud for his role in collecting over $100K in money for ALS (better known as LOU GHERIG'S DISEASE) research through his charitable organization, the TODD KELLY FOUNDATION. The IRS has no evidence or record of the foundation or any of the thousands of dollars in donations it collected.
The KENTUCKY STATE POLICE are currently investigating claims that KELLY, who allegedly suffers from the disorder, failed in most cases to pass the money he collected through his foundation onto any organizations other than his own allegedly fraudulent one. The WHAS-TV report suggest that some people feel KELLY may have faked the illness altogether, although the station does not identify these people by name. KELLY also says he suffers from brain and bone cancer, although WHAS-TV disputes that, as well.
In 2001, KELLY told his radio audience of his afflication, and began to solicit donations for the local MDA chapter. It took one local organization, OLMSTEAD, many months, and involvement from the JEFFERSON COUNTRY attorney's office to collect $9,000 in promised donations from one of his fund raisers.
For his part, KELLY told WHAS-TV reporters that he gave the money to people who needed "braces and beds," and that he utilized some of the money for his own care. KELLY declined to give the names of people to whom he gave money, and has yet to prove he's a victim of ALS. KELLY has never registerd with the local MDA chapter for referrels or local treatment on a progressive disease that by now would have shown outward signs of disability.
