An overflow house of friends and admirers packed the Beachfront Tent in SANTA MONICA for the CITY OF HOPE'S 2008 Spirit Of Life Award Dinner that honored UNIVERSAL MUSIC GROUP Chairman/CEO DOUG MORRIS. The event raised a record $10 million!
MORRIS, who was introduced by STEVIE NICKS and INTERSCOPE/GEFFEN/A&M co-Chairman JIMMY IOVINE, told everyone, "I am deeply honored to serve as this year's Spirit Of Life recipient to help recognize the innovative research conducted at CITY OF HOPE to find a cure for cancer." MORRIS then announced a personal donation of $1 million in honor of UMG President/COO ZACH HOROWITZ and his father BEN HOROWITZ, who was past President at CITY OF HOPE.
After quipping good naturedly with the nearly 2,000 guests, MORRIS turned serious and talked about the future of the music business and told everyone he believed that digital technology, which has challenged the industry through piracy and lost sales, will be the avenue toward profitability.
The evening's entertainment was showcased by the DOUG MORRIS MOTOWN REVUE, and following an introduction by MOTOWN founder BERRY GORDY, there were performances by MARIAH CAREY, MICHAEL McDONALD, RIHANNA, LIONEL RICHIE, CLIQUE GIRLZ, ERYKAH BADU, MAROON 5, LEE ANN WOMACK, AKON and more, conducted by INTERSCOPE/GEFFEN/A&M's RON FAIR.
The Spirit Of Life Award is the CITY OF HOPE's most prestigious philanthropic honor that recognizes individuals who have committed their time and resources to helping those in need. The Spirit Of Life Award honorees are selected for their notable contributions to their community and profession.
