BBC RADIO BRISTOL host SAM MASON has been fired after comments made in a call to a taxi company created a furor in the press. MASON asked the dispatcher to send a cab for her daughter but specified that the taxi company should not send an Asian driver because "a guy in a turban is going to freak (her daughter) out."
MASON, a former television personality at ITV affiliate HTV/BRISTOL who joined RADIO BRISTOL six weeks ago, called the taxi company off the air, but the company taped the call and passed a copy to national tabloid THE SUN, leading to her suspension and now firing.
A statement by the BBC said, "Although SAM MASON's remarks were not made on-air, her comments were completely unacceptable and, for that reason, she has been informed that she will no longer be working for the BBC with immediate effect."
