Rep. HENRY WAXMAN (D-CA) won the Chairman post at the HOUSE ENERGY AND COMMERCE COMMITTEE, knocking Rep. JOHN DINGELL (D-MI) out of the position by a 137-122 vote that went counter to the traditional deference to seniority in choosing committee chairpersons. The committee oversees the FCC.
WAXMAN is seen as further to the left on regulatory issues than DINGELL, and has supported environmental regulation that DINGELL, a strong backer of the auto industry, opposed. WAXMAN vigorously denied an AMERICAN SPECTATOR report earlier this year that he had plans to investigate conservative talk hosts.
