Condolences to family and friends of longtime MEMPHIS broadcaster FRED COOK, who died MONDAY of congestive heart failure after treatment for lung cancer in MEMPHIS at 83.
COOK spent 50 years in local radio at WREC-A, where he started in 1950 and paired with JOHN POWELL starting in 1962; he also worked at WREC-TV (later WREG-TV) and WPTY-TV and served as public address announcer for MEMPHIS STATE/UNIVERSITY OF MEMPHIS basketball. His voice remains in use via tape as the announcer for the popular duck parade in the lobby of the THE PEABODY hotel.
