Comments by ESPN RADIO midday host SCOTT VAN PELT criticizing MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL Commissioner BUD SELIG have created controversy, with USA TODAY's MICHAEL HIESTAND reporting that VAN PELT apologized to SELIG and DEADSPIN's A.J. DAULERIO reporting that the network suspended VAN PELT for the comments.
VAN PELT ripped SELIG for taking a large salary (pegged at $18.5 million by SPORTS BUSINESS JOURNAL) and called the Commissioner "someone who looks like a computer programmer, substitute teacher or government worker," also likening SELIG to a pimp. "He probably has a chalice with 'B-U-D' spelled out in jewels and diamonds," VAN PELT said. "You drink from a chalice if you're a pimp."
At DEADSPIN, DAULERIO said that VAN PELT would be suspended TODAY for his rant, citing "numerous sources" at ESPN. VAN PELT was not on the air TODAY, with his 1-3p partner MIKE TIRICO filling in for VAN PELT's solo hour as well.
