Lawyer ROBERT MCDOWELL's probable nomination to the FCC has picked up support from SENATE COMMERCE COMMITTEE Chairman TED STEVENS (R-AK), who told reporters "I've suggested (MCDOWELL) and others, but I would support him."
STEVENS has reportedly been miffed that the WHITE HOUSE has not accepted his recommendations of other candidates, including two of his former aides, but his comments TUESDAY indicate that he will accept MCDOWELL, who is controversial among the big telephone companies for his work with COMPTEL, a lobbying group for smaller telecom companies, on the Commission. The official announcement of MCDOWELL's nomination may not be made before next month.
