A research firm tells the LOS ANGELES TIMES that illegal downloading of HOWARD STERN's SIRIUS SATELLITE RADIO show increased fivefold on THURSDAY after a TIMES article discussed the show's widespread availability for free on the Internet.
RADAR RESEARCH Managing Partner ARAM SINNREICH told the paper that "the genie's out of the bottle" now that the publicity boosted piracy of the show; the RIAA's MITCH BAINWOL told the TIMES that "SIRIUS, the music community and other property owners are in the same boat. We want and deserve a fair return on our investment. When that return is compromised, so too is the risk-taking necessary to bring new content to fans."
The genie's out of the bottle.
Fans point to SIRIUS' not putting STERN's show online through streaming as an additional impetus for the illegal downloading; STERN's show is easily found through file-swapping services like BITTORRENT and in USENET binary newsgroups.
