MERCURY BROADCASTING Top 40 WHTS (ALL HIT 98-9)/QUAD CITIES, IA broadcast for the final time this past FRIDAY (2/3). As previously reported (NET NEWS 12/2), WHTS is ending its JSA with CLEAR CHANNEL on FEBRUARY 15th in anticipation that the station will be sold to EDUCATIONAL MEDIA FOUNDATION, which reportedly will drop the Top 40 format and flip to a turnkey Christian outlet by MARCH.
On FRIDAY (2/3), RED HOT BRIAN SCOTT, DARIK KRISTOFER and about 20 staff and station alumni recalled memories and took requests from listeners spanning the last 18 years. Since FEBRUARY 3 was the anniversary of "day the music died," DON MCLEAN's "American Pie" was voted by listeners as WHTS final song, followed by a farewell montage, and a final round of messages by the staff. At 11:59:57, WHTS signed off the air. The montage can be heard at www.redhotbrianscott.com.
