SALEM Business KDOW-A/SAN FRANCISCO is seeking to build an new transmission facility in HAYWARD, CA, and the HAYWARD REVIEW reports that the station hopes to overcome local opposition to the four-tower array with a $5 million payment to the city followed by $60,000 annual lease payments, aimed at helping the city build and operate a new library building. The city is also in line for a $10 million contribution from CALPINE if a separate project is approved.
The HAYWARD Planning Commission approved the towers in a 4-3 vote last year, but the opposition to the new radio facility has come from the HAYWARD AREA SHORELINE PLANNING AGENCY, which has decided that KDOW's proposed towers are "not compatible with the use of the shoreline."
The new facility would allow KDOW to increase to 50,000 watts full-time from the present 5,000 watts days/145 watts nights. A public hearing on SALEM's offer is set for TUESDAY.
