The five-year saga of the abortive sale of BARRY UNIVERSITY noncommercial WXEL-F and PBS affiliate WXEL-TV/WEST PALM BEACH takes another turn with the reported renewed interest of PBS affiliate WPBT-TV/MIAMI in buying the embattled stations.
The PALM BEACH POST reports that WPBT, which was one of the original suitors for the WXEL stations when they were initially put on the block, remains interested in buying the stations, and the college's board will meet to talk about WXEL's future on OCTOBER 23rd. A local foundation that fought an attempt by the owner of WNET (TV)/NEW YORK and WLIW-TV/GARDEN CITY, NY to attempt to buy the stations, the COMMUNITY BROADCAST FOUNDATION OF PALM BEACH AND THE TREASURE COAST, has vowed to fight a sale to WPBT as well, objecting because the stations would end up in the hands of owners outside the PALM BEACH COUNTY area.
FLORIDA ATLANTIC UNIVERSITY, another suitor for the stations, issued a statement MONDAY saying that it "remains interested in the future of the stations." NOVA SOUTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY, which was a potential buyer in the initial stages, has withdrawn its interest.
