HFX BROADCASTING has been granted a license by the CRTC for a new English-language FM in HALIFAX. HFX will launch an AAA station at 105.1 FN with 32,000 watts average ERP; its application beat out competing bids by FRANK TORRES and ACADIA BROADCASTING CORP. In a related ruling, the CRTC rejected PARRSBORO RADIO SOCIETY's bid for a power increase for its Type B community FM CICR/PARRSBORO, NS because the increase would add coverage to areas not intended to be part of the station's coverage area.
In addition, NEWCAP won a power increase for its Hot AC CJUK/THUNDER BAY, ON, bringing the station from 37 to 250 watts and reclassifying the station from low-power unprotected status to Class A.
