NEWSDAY is reporting that local residents of LONG ISLAND's EAST END have apparently succeeded in saving noncommercial NPR affiliate WLIU/SOUTHAMPTON, LONG ISLAND in its present format, with the reported acceptance by LONG ISLAND UNIVERSITY of a $2.7 million bid by PECONIC PUBLIC BROADCASTING for the station. The package includes half in cash, a promise to cover about $400,000 in operating costs, and assistance in keeping the student station at the C.W. POST campus, WCWP/BROOKVILLE, LONG ISLAND, operating for another year.
The PECONIC bid, fueled by a fund drive that included donations from several notables with homes in the HAMPTONS, has apparently bested bids from religious station operators for the station.
