COX Hawaiian KCCN (FM 100)/HONOLULU morning co-host AUGIE TULBA has become the subject of a non-compete battle involving his previous employer, crosstown VISIONARY RELATED ENTERTAINMENT Top 40 KQMQ (93.1 THE ZONE), according to the HONOLULU STAR BULLETIN.
VISIONARY minority shareholder JASON WOLFF is claiming that TULBA is still under contract to his company. However, TULBA claims that his six-month non-compete with VISIONARY expired in SEPTEMBER (he exited KQMQ in MARCH), and that he also sought, and was granted, a release from VRE LLC Pres. JOHN DETZ, with who he signed the contract when he joined the company.
Apparently, the misunderstanding is the result of a legal dispute between the two ownership factions. COX released a statement saying that they are "happy that AUGIE has joined us," and that "We don't agree with (WOLFF's) letter, that's really all there is to it."
For his part, AUGIE's comment to the STAR BULLETIN reflects what many of us have felt about non-competes over the years: "They had no interest in me and now I'm a threat to their business. What is that?"
