Today is ISOTHERMAL COMMUNITY COLLEGE Triple A/Americana hybrid WNCW/SPINDALE, NC’s 20th Anniversary. On OCTOBER 13th, 1989, a group of Isothermal Community College employees and volunteers gathered in Spindale to make their final plans to prepare to go on the air. Then Chief Engineer, JIM LIVERETT flipped the switch on the transmitter to unleash what quickly became and has remained one of the most cutting-edge and passionately supported radio stations in the format.
Station MD MARTIN ANDERSON kicked off his Morning Music Mix TODAY with THE BEATLES’ "Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band," which appropriately starts off with the lyrics "It was 20 years ago today!"
But all is not rosy at the station. The station had to reduce its staff recently due to a cut of over $201,000 in annual funding from the State of North Carolina. However, WNCW is now determined to make up the difference in their fall fund drive, which is set to begin NOVEMBER 4th. Thankfully, a large chunk of that loss has already been covered due to the generous support of listeners and other local organizations and businesses.
For the little station that could, it is onward and upward!
