The rumor of an iPHONE with an FM tuner just keeps getting louder. APPLE added a tuner to the iPOD NANO, which was met with much delight from users (NET NEWS 9/22). However in JUNE (NET NEWS 6/9), APPLE's new iPOD skipped the tuner. Now, 9TO5MAC.COM is reporting they've "received a tip that an iPHONE radio app is being developed in-house by APPLE for use on the iPHONE and iPOD TOUCH."
9TO5MAC.COM surmises the delay in adding the FM tuner is being caused by APPLE's desire to integrate MOBILE iTUNES STORE purchases into the iPHONE.
The report points out that iPODS and iPHONES have actually had FM functionality for some time. "The latest generation of iPHONE and iPOD TOUCH can even broadcast an FM signal -- for instance to a car stereo. The ability of the iPHONE and iPOD TOUCH to receive FM signals has been used solely in the implementation of the NIKE+ ecosystem to this point."
MICROSOFT's ZUNE HD already has included an FM tuner.
