The NOKIA THEATER in LOS ANGELES hosted the AMERICAN MUSIC AWARDS last night, with 19-year-old TAYLOR SWIFT winning the most awards, five, including being named 2009's favorite artist -- but the late MICHAEL JACKSON suprised all by winning four AMA awards, reports MSNBC.
JACKSON’s AMAs were accepted by his brother JERMAINE, who said MICHAEL’s message is more important than any award. "The message that MICHAEL had will live on forever," he said. "He saw good in everyone and he wanted everyone to do good. He always started with love." JERMAINE paid tribute to his late brother by wearing a glittered white glove.
JACKSON won the favorite male artist award in the pop/rock and soul/R&B categories. His 2003 greatest-hits album, "Number Ones," also won favorite album in both categories.
JANET JACKSON opened the show, performing a medley of her biggest hits.
LADY GAGA, wearing a "Vulcan-inspired headdress and vest filled with lights," performed songs from her new album, “The Fame Monster." She then used her microphone to break into a glass case, which housed a grand piano that caught fire when she sat down to play.
Voted "the favorite pop/rock bad" were THE BLACK EYED PEAS, who performed two big hits from this year, "I Got A Feeling" and "Boom Boom Pow." A medley ended with a sample of NIRVANA with WILL.I.AM on guitar.
Othert highlights included RIHANNA, who returned to the AMA stage, and ALICIA KEYS and JAY-Z, who dueted on their ode to NEW YORK CITY. SHAKIRA, surrounded by a dozen dancers, sang her new single, and KELLY CLARKSON performed an acoustic version of her hit "Already Gone," backed by a string quartet.
Lambert Shocks, J-Lo Rocks -- The Floor
Former AMERICAN IDOL runnerup ADAM LAMBERT shocked more than a few viewers with a controversial performance of "For Your Entertainment." The background set featured sexual fetish scenarios, with LAMBERT pulling two men on leashes, had simulated oral sex with a male dancer and made out with his male keyboard player.CNN interviewed LAMBERT after the show. JENNIFER LOPEZ tested her world famous "padding," when she slipped during a dance-filled performance and landed on her rear end.
Country Trio Thank Radio
TAYLOR SWIFT, who accepted her awards via satellite said, "I want to say thank you to Country radio for giving the fans a chance to hear my music."Country band GLORIANA also used the stage to thank radio. Accepting the award for Breakthrough Artist of the Year, band member RACHEL REINERT said, "We gotta thank Country radio so much for playing our music."
Also praising radio was KEITH URBAN, AMA winner in the Country Male category, who took the stage and thanked "all our friends at Country radio."
