Bess Lomax Hawes Passes Away At The Age Of 88

ALL ACCESS sends condolences to the friends and family of musician and folklorist BESS LOMAX HAWES who passed away on FRIDAY (12/11) in PORTLAND, OREGON. She was 88.
BESS is known for helping to pen the folk ballad "M.T.A.," which became a hit for the KINGSTRON TRIO. BESS was a member of the ALMANAC SINGERS in the 1940s, along with PETE SEEGER and WOODY GUTHRIE. She was the sister of famed folklorist ALAN LOMAX and their father was song curator JOHN A. LOMAX.
BESS was also a member of the NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS and in 1993 she was awarded the NATIONAL MEDAL OF THE ARTS by PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON.
