Analyst: iPod Touch The Big Holiday Winner

The Apps Have It

Industry analysts expect the iPOD TOUCH to be the big winner in terms of holiday sales. They came to that conclusion by measuring the number of applications being downloaded on CHRISTMAS DAY, reports ARS TECHNICA.

Mobile analytics firm FLURRY produced data that found significant increases in app downloads to IPOD TOUCHES and iPHONES. The most likely cause for the download increase is attributed to a large number of new iPOD TOUCH users tearing off the wrapping, charging up the device, and downloading apps for the first time. Downloads may also have been fueled further by the popular iTUNES gift card, which can be used for apps as well as music and movies.

However, there was a huge disparity in the size of the app download increases. The app download increase for iPOD TOUCH devices were 172% higher than the spike in downloads to iPHONES. App downloads typically track slightly lower for the iPOD touch versus the iPHONE according to FLURRY's data. On DECEMBER 26th, iPOD touch downloads topped iPHONE downloads even while trending sharply down towards more normal levels.

FLURRY's analysis also showed strong growth for ANDROID downloads; THE MOTOROLA DROID was responsible for half of app downloads for the ANDROID platform. Yet while there was a 22% increase in download sales of ANDROIDs sequentially from NOVEMBER to DECEMBER, it still pales in comparison to the App Store download increase of 51% sequentially. APPLE still has over 13 times the number of downloads overall.
