A MICHIGAN Court of Appeals panel has ruled in favor of former EASTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY noncommercial WEMU/YPSILANTI, MI host THERON "THAYRONE" HUGHES III in his suit alleging that he was fired in APRIL 2003 for supporting President BUSH and the IRAQ war.
HUGHES hosted "THE BONE CONDUCTION MUSIC SHOW" on WEMU for 17 years before his firing, with the station claiming the dismissal was for HUGHES' refusal to run NPR news updates, but a 2-1 vote of the three-judge panel, reversing a lower court decision, held that the firing was over HUGHES' BUSH and war comments and violated HUGHES' First Amendment rights. The case is being remanded to WASHTENAW Circuit Court for further action; HUGHES is now hosting a daily afternoon show on Talk WAAM-A and continues his weekend music show on that station.
