A report by influential BANC OF AMERICA SECURITYES analyst JONATHAN JACOBY gave HOWARD STERN credit for lifting subscriptions to SIRIUS SATELLITE RADIO 29% in DECEMBER and JANUARY but said that STERN's effect will wane over the next few months.
JACOBY said he expects XM SATELLITE RADIO to pull back to even with SIRIUS at retail "as the STERN hype subsides." SIRIUS had about 55% of retail satellite receiver sales in DECEMBER and JANUARY, with XM having 37% and the other 8% not recalling which they bought.
STERN dismissed the report on his show WEDNESDAY, saying that his effect will be more about swaying the purchase of those who have already decided on satellite radio ("oh, that's the one with STERN, I'll take that one").
He also discussed the possibility of changing one of his channels on the service to nothing but repeats of his morning show, claiming that he is being requested to do so by fans. Both of his channels presently combine STERN's morning show with repeated airings of "HOWARD 100 NEWS" and some original programming, including BUBBA THE LOVE SPONGE's show, a "wrap-up show" after STERN's show, the "FRIDAY SHOW" (in place of an original STERN show on FRIDAY mornings), "SUPERFAN ROUNDTABLE," and various "wack pack"-hosted shows.
