ROBERT MCDOWELL had his day at the SENATE COMMERCE COMMITTEE THURSDAY and assured the panel that his work for a group representing smaller telecommunications companies would not result in his prejudging telecom mergers or other issues if he is confirmed to take a seat on the FCC.
MCDOWELL, counsel for COMPTEL, said he would consult with the Commission's counsel before deciding whether to recuse himself from certain proceedings, including the proposed AT&T purchase of BELLSOUTH. COMPTEL has opposed such mergers on behalf of the larger companies' competitors.
A committee vote could come as soon as next THURSDAY (3/16) with a full Senate vote to follow; confirmation of the Republican nominee to the FCC is expected.
