FCC Sets Agenda For Public Interest Workshop

The FCC has released the agenda for its MARCH 4th workshop on "Serving the Public Interest in the Digital Era." The panels, focusing specifically on commercial media, will look at the history of public interest requirements for broadcasters, the current state of commercial broadcast radio and TV news and the impact of media convergence and new media on media policy.
After remarks by moderator and Chairman JULIUS GENACHOWSKI's Senior Advisor STEVEN WALDMAN and Commissioner MICHAEL COPPS, a panel on the "public interest" standard will include PRINCETON professor PAUL STARR, former FCC General Counsel HENRY GELLER, and former FCC Media Bureau Deputy Chief ROBERT RADCLIFFE.
The second panel will look at public interest obligations of traditional medla, with GEORGETOWN professor ANGELA CAMPBELL, former RTDNA Pres. BARBARA COCHRAN, ALLBRITTON COMMUNICATIONS SVP JERALD N. FRITZ, the NAB's EVP/General Counsel JANE MAGO, NYU professor ERIC KLINENBERG, the PEW RESEARCH CENTER's TOM ROSENSTEIL, and MEDIA ACCESS PROJECT Pres./CEO ANDREW SCHWARTZMAN participating.
Finally, a panel on convergence and digital media will feature attorney DANIEL L. BRENNER, CTIA VP Regulatory Affairs CHRISTOPHER GUTTMAN-MCCABE, BUZZMACHINE.COM blogger, journalist, "WHAT WOULD GOOGLE DO?" author, and CUNY professor JEFF JARVIS, AP VP/General Counsel SRINANDAN KASI, FREE PRESS Policy Dir. BEN SCOTT, and the PROGRESS AND FREEDOM FOUNDATION Center for Media and Digital Freedom Pres./Dir. ADAM THIERER.
