Ofcom: Temporary 2012 Olympic Stations Will Be Digital-Only

U.K. radio regulator OFCOM has ruled that all temporary radio stations set up for the 2010 SUMMER OLYMPICS in LONDON will be digital-only. 

The agency cited insufficient capacity on the AM and FM dials for the decision, noting that "Within the M25 LONDON orbital motorway, the availability of FM spectrum in particular is likely to be minimal. Some limited AM frequency resources may be available, although coverage is likely to be limited to a few kilometres radius, depending upon transmitter location etc."  It said, however, that it does not plan to license temporary AM stations for the event.

OFCOM has opened the window for "preliminary expressions of interest" for short-term radio licenses for the OLYMPICS and says that after taking the preliminary applications, it will then decide whether to proceed with the licensing of temporary stations and will open an inquiry into application and licensing processes.

Submissions of preliminary expressions of interest are due at the agency by APRIL 29th.
