ARBITRON has greeted the opening of the baseball season with a report of radio audience listening for the sport. The "ARBITRON Sports Report: PPMTM Radio Listening for Pro Baseball" covers game coverage for the 2009 season and 25 teams in 23 markets where the Portable People Meter service has been commercialized.
"Through the years there's been no better way to follow a team than daily and nightly broadcasts of games on the radio," said ARBITRON Sports Manager CHRIS MEINHARDT. "AMERICA's relationship with baseball is as healthy as ever. Arbitron's inaugural PPM Radio Listening for Pro Baseball shows that relationship and loyalty by reporting the 2009 performance of 25 teams in 23 commercialized PPM markets."
Among the findings in the report are that the top 10 teams individually average over 115,000 listeners per game in their home market. The top 10 6+ audiences are for the NEW YORK YANKEES (WCBS-A/NEW YORK, 412,500 cume), CHICAGO CUBS (WGN-A/CHICAGO, 277,100), NEW YORK METS (WFAN-A/NEW YORK, 277,000), PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES (WPHT-A/PHILADELPHIA, 160,300), DETROIT TIGERS (WXYT-A-F (97.1 THE TICKET)/DETROIT, 158,600), SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS (KNBR-A/SAN FRANCISCO, 151.600), ST. LOUIS CARDINALS (KTRS-A/ST. LOUIS, 135,200), BOSTON RED SOX (WEEI-A/BOSTON, 128.800), CHICAGO WHITE SOX (WSCR-A/CHICAGO, 122,700), and LOS ANGELES DODGERS (KABC-A/LOS ANGELES, 115,600).
"Tradition, success and to a lesser extent, the team's flagship station drive audiences," said MEINHARDT. "ST. LOUIS, DETROIT, PHILADELPHIA, BOSTON and MINNESOTA dominated their markets with broadcasts that averaged more than 14 shares from Men aged 25-54 when games were being played."
