The FCC has adopted a plan to establish a Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau. The Commission, in a press release, said that the new department "is designed to provide a more efficient, effective, and responsive organizational structure to address public safety, homeland security, national security, emergency management and preparedness, disaster management, and other related issues."
The bureau will have a front office and three divisions, the Policy Division, the Public Communications Outreach & Operations Division, and the Communications Systems Analysis Division. Duties will include several functions presently spread out among other bureaus, including disaster management coordination and outreach, public safety outreach, and emergency communications, including alerts and warnings.
The plan requires notification of Congress before becoming effective.
