ESPN RADIO's "Don't Give Up ESPYs V FOUNDATION Auction," combined with this weekend's 10th annual "ESPY Celebrity Golf Classic," raised $1.63 million for the V FOUNDATION FOR CANCER RESEARCH, the charity founded in 1993 by ESPN and the late basketball coach and commentator JIM VALVANO. Over the years, the two events have raised over $11.7 million for cancer research.
ESPN and ABC SPORTS President and DISNEY MEDIA NETWORKS Co-Chairman GEORGE BODENHEIMER said, "JIM VALVANO's speech was where it all began. The commitment of sponsors, celebrities and volunteers to raise money for cancer research is absolutely inspiring.”
V FOUNDATION CEO NICK VALVANO, JIM's brother, added, “I cannot put into words the gratitude we at THE V FOUNDATION have for the hard work and dedication that ESPN puts into fundraising for cancer research. It’s the perfect culmination of enthusiastic, caring people coming together for a great cause.”
The golf tournament was held at the INDUSTRY HILLS GOLF CLUB in INDUSTRY HILLS, CA and included a long list of sports and entertainment celebrities. The radio auction was held JUNE 29th through JULY 9th and offered over 340 experiences and items online and 38 fan "experiences" on ESPN RADIO's six national shows on JULY 9th, raising an estimated $500,000.
