Daniel Schorr Dies At 93

DANIEL SCHORR, the longtime Senior News Analyst for NPR and the last working member of EDWARD R. MURROW's CBS NEWS "MURROW'S BOYS," died TODAY (7/23) after a short illness at 93. SCHORR had been with NPR since 1995, contributing to "WEEKEND EDITION" and "ALL THINGS CONSIDERED." 

His storied career, which began at the CHRISTIAN SCIENCE MONITOR and NEW YORK TIMES, also included over 20 years at CBS (ending controversially with his resignation after being suspended for releasing a secret Congressional report on covert intelligence activities) and a run at CNN, where he was part of the original news team and served as Sr. Correspondent in WASHINGTON.

"WEEKEND EDITION" host SCOTT SIMON said, "I was privileged to know DAN SCHORR for 25 years and cherish him as a fierce journalist, and a tender friend and father. We used to joke, 'I'm not DAN's son. But I play DAN's son on the radio.' Sharing the studio with him, and so many laughs and memories, has been the blessing of a lifetime.

"What other person was personally acquainted with both RICHARD NIXON and FRANK ZAPPA? DAN was around for both the Russian Revolution and the Digital Revolution. Nobody else in broadcast journalism -- or perhaps any field -- had as much experience and wisdom. I am just glad that, after being known for so many years as a tough and uncompromising journalist, NPR listeners also got to know the DAN SCHORR that was playful, funny and kind. In a business that's known for burning out people, DAN SCHORR shined for nearly a century."
