University Of Houston Considers Purchase Of Rice U.'s KTRU

The UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON is planning to buy RICE UNIVERSITY's noncommercial KTRU/HOUSTON for $9.5 million, reports the HOUSTON CHRONICLE. The move, being considered at a governing board meeting TODAY (8/17), would give the buyer a companion frequency for its noncommercial Classical-News-Talk KUHF and would allow the school to move all Classical programming to KTRU and convert KUHF to all-News-Talk.
OHIO MEDIA WATCH is reporting that BEACON BROADCASTING is selling YOUNGSTOWN market Sports WANR-A/WARREN, OH, and WRTK-A/NILES, OH (FOX SPORTS RADIO 1540 AND 1570) are being sold to CHRIS and KATHY LASH's WHIPLASH RADIO, LLC for $50,000. The LASHES operate noncommercial WYNS/WAYNESVILLE, OH; BEACON's owner, HAROLD GLUNT, died on JANUARY 25th and is being sold off by his executor, son DENNIS GLUNT, with another buyer negotiating to buy BEACON's three remaining stations, Classic Country WGRP-A and AC WEXC (C107.1)/GREENVILLE, PA, and Classic Country WLOA-A/FARRELL, PA.
WINGS COMMUNICATIONS Talk WELE-A/DAYTONA BEACH has been LMA'd to local host BIG JOHN's GOLIATH RADIO LLC, who is in the process of purchasing the station from embattled WINGS owner DOUG WILHITE. The DAYTONA BEACH NEWS-JOURNAL reports that the sale has been held up while the FCC considers an objection by competitor BLACK CROW BROADCASTING.
In deals filed with the FCC, DANA COLLEGE has been placed in receivership, and receiver CORDES AND COMPANY has applied to the FCC to transfer the license of noncommercial Variety KDCV-F/BLAIR, NE to itself under court order. The college was founded in 1884 and closed in JULY after the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools refused to allow the school to transfer its accreditation to new for-profit ownership.
ALABAMA CHRISTIAN RADIO, INC. is selling the construction permit for WQLS/GOODWATER, AL to FIRST ASSEMBLY OF GOD for $1.
And VICTOR M. VICKERS is selling FM translator W242BE/WAYCROSS, GA to SATILLA BROADCAST PROPERTIES, LLC for $28,000.
In addition, ST. JEROME EDUCATIONAL ASSOCIATION has applied for an extension of its Silent STA for low power FM WXXP-LP/BELOIT, WI to get more time for technical adjustments.
