NPR Launches 'Argo Network' Websites

NPR's "ARGO NETWORK" of local websites dealing with specific issues in their communities is officially launching TODAY (9/8). The 12 sites, part of a $3 million local journalism project supported by grants from the KNIGHT FOUNDATION and the CORPORATION FOR PUBLIC BROADCASTING, are funded only through fiscal year 2011.

The sites include WBUR/BOSTON's COMMONHEALTH, looking at health care reform; WGBH-WCAI/BOSTON's CLIMATIDE site, examining climate change on CAPE COD; MINNESOTA PUBLIC RADIO's ON CAMPUS education site; OREGON PUBLIC BROADCASTING's ECOTROPE environmental news site; WNYC-F-A/NEW YORK's local politics and government site, THE EMPIRE; WXPN/PHILADELPHIA's local music site THE KEY; KPBS/SAN DIEGO's military-focused HOME POST; KALW/SAN FRANCISCO's law enforcement sits THE INFORMANT; KQED/SAN FRANCISCO's MINDSHIFT education site; KPLU/SEATTLE's health site HUMANOSPHERE; SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA PUBLIC RADIO (KPCC/PASADENA-LOS ANGELES) immigration news site MULTI-AMERICAN; and WAMU/WASHINGTON's local news site DCENTRIC.

"The ARGO project has launched a dozen independent, news sites of substance and immediacy, where people can deepen their understanding of the critical issues that affect both communities and the nation," said NPR Pres./CEO VIVIAN SCHILLER. "By networking the sites, each station gains national perspective, audience and the opportunity to learn from the experiences of the others."
