The MTV VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS were dominated by LADY GAGA, who posted wins in eight categories, seven of which were for her #1 single "Bad Romance." The singer also took home an award for best collaboration for her record-breaking duet "Telephone," featuring BEYONCÉ.
LADY GAGA thanked her "little monsters" and the "gays" who remade the "Bad Romance" video, which has been watched nearly 278 million times on YOUTUBE and VEVO. LADY GAGA used the opportunity to draw attention to the SERVICEMEMBERS LEGAL DEFENSE NETWORK, which campaigns on behalf of service men and women affected by the "don't ask, don't tell" policy. Accompanied by various apparently discharged soliders in military uniform, GAGA told MTV, "I'm here for a very, very important cause tonight. These are all my friends and they are with SLDN.ORG, which is an organization that was founded in 1993 under the reaction to the 'don't ask, don't tell' policies. Their stories are very inspiring and there's so much we can do right now."
"From the self-deprecating teaser promos leading up to the show to her haphazard LADY GAGA impersonation to countless brazen one-liners and a skit involving spontaneous impregnation courtesy of a quick dip in the 'Jersey Shore' hot tub, CHELSEA HANDLER nailed her first-time VMA-hosting gig," said an MTV spokesperson. The E! talk-show host kicked things off with a pre-taped video, in which she was repeatedly smacked on the rear at random, as well as given a brutal coaching session from LINDSAY LOHAN.
JUSTIN BIEBER was another big winner, as the 16-year-old pop star won the award for best new artist for his song "Baby."
Anyone waiting for controversy from KANYE WEST, a la last year -- when he interrupted TAYLOR SWIFT -- is still waiting, as both artists simply hinted at last year's events in their performances. KANYE WEST premiered a new song, "Runway," and SWIFT performed her song "Innocent," with no issues.
