AOL today announced that after 15 years it is retiring the name AMERICA ONLINE and will now officially be known simply as AOL.
AOL Chairman & CEO JON MILLER notes, "Our company long ago accomplished the mission implied by our old name `we literally got America online.' Our new corporate identity better reflects our expanded mission to make everyone’s online experience better. Plus, consumers in the U.S. and around the world already know us by our initials."
Meanwhile, the legal structure of AOL has been changed from a corporation to a limited liability company.
