MATT PATRICK wasted no time getting attention as the new host of "MICHIANA'S MORNING NEWS" at FEDERATED MEDIA Talk WTRC (NEWS TALK 95.3 MNC)/SOUTH BEND, enraging MICHIGAN STATE fans by jokingly suggesting that SPARTANS coach MARK DANTONIO's post-game heart attack after MSU beat NOTRE DAME on SATURDAY was a case of God's revenge on a cheater.
On MONDAY, PATRICK, discussing the way overtime ended on a trick play -- a fake field goal leading to a touchdown as the clock appeared to show time running out before the snap -- joked, "The moral of the story is you mess around with the FIGHTING IRISH, you cheat on the last play of the game, overtime, and beat the IRISH, God is going to get you." After a barrage of negative MSU fan reaction to his comments, PATRICK posted an apology to DANTONIO on YOUTUBE.
"Maybe I could've chosen my words a little bit differently," PATRICK told the DETROIT FREE PRESS. "I don't believe God did anything. And I don't believe Coach deserved it. I'm not out to shock anybody. This situation, to me, is one where I can step back and say, 'I should have said it a little bit differently.' I can take my lumps ... Coach (DANTONIO) and I have spoken before. I consider him a great guy and a great coach. I'm hoping maybe he will give me 30 seconds at the end of the week."
