The PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE's BOB SMIZIK, citing unnamed "multiple industry sources," is reporting that ESPN Sports WEAE-A (1250 ESPN)/PITTSBURGH, will drop most local programming and staff at the end of this week and will flip to carrying RADIO DISNEY at the end of the year.
According to SMIZIK, the station will go to carrying the full ESPN RADIO network feed through DECEMBER 31st and will pick up RADIO DISNEY, presently heard on BIRACH BROADCASTING's WWCS-A/CANONSBURG-PITTSBURGH under a lease that expires at the end of 2010, on JANUARY 1st, with the ESPN programming likely to move to crosstown CLEAR CHANNEL Sports WBGG-A (FOX SPORTS RADIO 970).
SMIZIK says that 1250 ESPN will continue to carry PENN STATE football and shows hosted by STEELERS linebackers JAMES FARRIOR, LAMARR WOODLEY and LARRY FOOTE until the end of the year. On the way out, if SMIZIK's sources are correct, are STAN SAVRAN and GUY JUNKER's 10a-2p (ET) show, "THE DRIVE" with SCOTT PAULSEN, MIKE LOGAN and CHRIS MACK (2-6p), and KEN LAIRD's STEELERS show.
On SUNDAY (9/26), SMIZIK reported, the station did not carry its customary locally-produced STEELERS pre- and post-game shows, airing ESPN RADIO national programming in its place.
