Author and former ABC "GOOD MORNING AMERICA" Exec. Producer BEN SHERWOOD is returning to ABC to take over as President of ABC NEWS.
SHERWOOD, who will take over the position after DAVID WESTIN's retirement becomes effective at the end of the year, left the network in 2006 and hit the bestseller lists with the novels "The Man Who Ate The 747" and "The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud" (made into a movie with ZAC EFRON) and the non-fiction "The Survivors Club." He has served as a producer of the "NBC NIGHTLY NEWS WITH TOM BROKAW" and ABC's "PRIMETIME LIVE WITH DIANE SAWYER AND SAM DONALDSON."
DISNEY MEDIA NETWORKS Co-Chair and DISNEY/ABC TELEVISION GROUP Pres. ANNE SWEENEY said, "BEN combines an intimate knowledge and success in the news business with a creative flair and entrepreneurial spirit that are second-to-none. While at ABC NEWS, he delivered GMA's two most successful seasons in history, and guided prize-winning coverage of some of the biggest stories of the day. Since then, he's become a best-selling author whose work has been adapted into feature films, and a digital media entrepreneur. This success, combined with a keen intellect and a truly gracious and generous spirit, make BEN the ideal person to lead our News efforts into the future."
In an interview with TV NEWSER's CHRIS ARIENS TODAY, SHERWOOD said, "One big challenge is the rapidly changing world of news and information. It’s a challenge for everybody in this industry. Everything is up for grabs. DAVID WESTIN has done a fantastic job positioning ABC NEWS for the future, especially the digital future. My job is to raise the competitive metabolism even higher, find bigger audiences, global audiences and along the way look at the website and radio and find a way to grow the overall audience."
