After weeks of speculation, rumors and false reports of switching to other formats, CUMULUS Top 40 WYOK/MOBILE has officially flipped and launched its new Country format as KICKS 104, GULF COAST COUNTRY.
WYOK had been running a continuous loop of LYNYRD SKYNYRD's "Sweet Home Alabama" since midnight WEDNESDAY (4/12), fueling speculation that it would be taking a Southern Rock approach. That speculation ended this morning at 8a CT when CADILLAC JACK, formerly of WXTU/PHILADELPHIA, hit the airwaves welcoming listeners to "...the GULF COAST's newest radio station, KICKS 104" and promising "40 minutes of back-to-back Country." JACK then launched into ALAN JACKSON's "Gone Country," giving credence to reports that the station, under the direction of veteran Country PD BRIAN LANDRUM, will be taking a more mainstream Country approach.
The rest of the first half-hour at WYOK included "Born Country" by ALABAMA, TRAVIS TRITT's "Country Club," and "Long Haired Country Boy" from CHARLIE DANIELS.
