Two separate CHICAGO sports websites, reporting on TRIBUNE Talk WGN-A/CHICAGO's search to replace the recently departed CUBS great and broadcast color man RON SANTO (NET NEWS, 12/XX), have both came up with the same favorite -- former CUB KEITH MORELAND.
CHICAGO SB.NATION.COM and CUBBIESCRIB.COM cite a bevy of contenders, most of whom are former CUBS players or have some sort of CHICAGO link. However, most of the biggest names -- MARK GRACE, RICK SUTCLIFFE, RICK MONDAY, RANDY HUNDLEY, GARY MATTHEWS DAN PLESAC and MITCH WILLIAMS -- either have cushy gigs or may be too old for working the 162-game season.
MORELAND has worked as a fill-in for CUBS TV and radio broadcasts for two years. He currently does UNIV. of TEXAS Longhorn football and baseball broadcasts; replacing SANTO would seem to be a definite step up the broadcasting ladder.
The CHICAGO TRIBUNE also covered the replacement search today as well.
