A group saying they consist of "anonymous radio veterans, entrepreneurs, and civic and business leaders are banding together to lead a grass roots campaign to take WLUP back as a CHICAGO institution. The group calls itself "Save THE LOOP," and was formed after EMMIS Rocker WLUP (THE LOOP)/CHICAGO became "CHICAGO's Classic Rock Station," last week (NET NEWS 1/24).
SAVE THE LOOP wants to buy WLUP, and program it with a more "modern rock format."
Taking a cue from THE GREEN BAY PACKERS and BEN & JERRY's ICE CREAM, the group said "If the bustling metropolises of GREEN BAY, WI and BURLINGTON, VT can pool together to own their beloved home-grown businesses, why can’t CHICAGOLAND radio fans who have literally grown up with THE LOOP get together and save their beloved station from being swallowed up yet again by some corporate conglomerate and treated as part of some rich guy’s 'holdings’?"
For now, fans of the current LOOP interested in seeing it live on, and disgruntled "Loyal Loopers" who are dismayed by moves in recent years such as last week’s musical shift and the release of legendary morning man JONATHON BRANDMEIER in 2009 are being asked to check out www.SaveTheLoop.com and sign the petition.
