Last month, we looked at how stations that flipped to all-CHRISTMAS music showed their PPM strength. Now, we have a recap of JANUARY's PPM market highlights, compiled by dmr for ALL ACCESS and powered by XTrends, radio's #1 PPM and diary analysis tool.
New York January 2011 -- LITE Shakes Holiday Buzz, Still #1
CLEAR CHANNEL AC WLTW (106.7 LITE FM) emerged from the holidays down 45%, but still on top in NEW YORK in JANUARY with 6.8 P6+ (from 12.3 in the HOLIDAY period). CBS Radio Classic Hits WCBS-F was #2 with 5.2 and CLEAR CHANNEL Top 40 WHTZ (Z100) was #3 with 4.7.
News/Talk outlets bounced back with double-digit percentage increases for CBS Radio News WCBS-A (3.5-4.4 P6+), CBS RADIO News WINS-A (3.2-4.2 P6+), and CITADEL Talk WABC-A (3.0-3.7 P6+). The same three stations were the biggest gainers P25-54 and P35-64, up from 21 to 44% in those demos.
Snapshot Trends (3 consecutive months, up or down)
Trending UP -- INNER CITY BROADCASTING Urban AC WBLS (P6+, P35-64)
Trending DOWN -- None.
Los Angeles January 2011 -- KIIS Is King, KOST Receeds From #1
CLEAR CHANNEL AC KOST (103.5) lost nearly half its HOLIDAY P6+ audience in JANUARY (9.3-5.0) falling behind #1 CLEAR CHANNEL Top 40 KIIS (5.7) while holding off #3 CBS RADIO Classic Hits KRTH (K-EARTH) (4.4) in LOS ANGELES.
KOST barely clung to the #1 position P25-54 after losing 49% of that demo, barely ahead of #2 KIIS and #3 CBS RADIO Alternative KROQ. KOST’s #1 position was equally tenuous in the P35-64 demo, leading #2 K-EARTH and #3 CLEAR CHANNEL Talk KFI-A by the slimmest of margins.
Though KFI-A had a strong JANUARY, music stations appeared to enjoy the biggest benefits as a result of the end of Christmas music programming in LOS ANGELES. KROQ, UNIVISION Spanish Contemporary KLVE, CBS RADIO Adult Hits KCBS-F (JACK FM), CITADEL Classic Rock KLOS, and CBS Radio Smooth Jazz KTWV (94.7 THE WAVE) all had double-digit percentage share increases P25-54.
Snapshot Trends (3 consecutive months, up or down)
Trending UP -- BONNEVILLE Classic Rock KSWD (P6+, P18-49, P25-54, P35-64), K-EARTH (P18-34), KIIS (P18-49)
Trending DOWN -- CLEAR CHANNEL Rhythmic AC KHHT (HOT 92.3) (P18-34), CLEAR CHANNEL Alternative KYSR (P35-64)
Chicago January 2011 -- News/Talk, THE MIX Blow Back To The Top In Windy City
CHICAGO got right back to business in JANUARY as News and Talk outlets surged back to the top after a temporary CHRISTMAS music beat-down. CBS RADIO News WBBM-A was #1 P6+ (6.4), followed by #2 TRIBUNE Talk WGN-A (5.2) and #3 CLEAR CHANNEL Urban AC WVAZ (V-103) (4.6). A third News/Talker, CITADEL Talk WLS-A, was #4 (4.4). The #1 station from the HOLIDAY rating period, CLEAR CHANNEL AC WLIT (93.9 LITE FM), fell from its CHRISTMAS music high (12.1) to #5 in JANUARY (4.1).
With a 28% share increase, BONNEVILLE AC WTMX (101.9 THE MIX) muscled its way past LITE to reclaim the #1 position P25-54, which it had not owned since OCTOBER. #2 V-103 and #3 BONNEVILLE Classic Hits WDRV were less than one share behind.
CLEAR CHANNEL Urban WGCI hit #1 P18-34 for the first time since MAY, ahead of #2 CBS RADIO Top 40/R WBBM-F (B96) and #3 CLEAR CHANNEL Top 40 WKSC (1035 KISS FM).
Snapshot Trends (3 consecutive months, up or down)
Trending UP -- CBS RADIO Triple A WXRT (P6+, P25-54, P35-64), WGCI (P18-34)
Trending DOWN -- UNIVISION Regional Mexican WOJO (P6+, P18-34, P18-49)
Dallas-Ft. Worth January 2011 -- Everything’s Bigger In Texas, Including The Fall From The Top
Ouch. CBS Radio AC KVIL fell from #1 to #10 P6+ in DALLAS-FT. WORTH, going 7.2 (HOLIDAY) to 3.2 in JANUARY. CLEAR CHANNEL Top 40 KHKS (106.1 KISS FM) was #1 (6.9), followed by #2 UNIVISION Regional Mexican KLNO (5.5) and #3 CUMULUS Country KPLX (5.3).
While CHRISTMAS music stations around the country have taken predictable falls from their HOLIDAY highs, the fall in DALLAS-FT. WORTH in JANUARY appeared to be bigger than for CHRISTMAS music stations in some other markets. While KVIL’s loss of 56% of its P6+ and P25-54 share from HOLIDAY to JANUARY wasn’t too different from losses seen by CHRISTMAS music stations in other markets, its drop in rank was much more significant. NEW YORK’s CLEAR CHANNEL AC WLTW (106.7 LITE FM) lost 45% and 44% of its P6+ and P25-54 shares respectively, yet maintained a #1 rank in both demos. In CHICAGO, CLEAR CHANNEL AC WLIT (93.9 LITE FM) was down 66% in both demos, yet only fell to #5 and #5t in the same demos. In LOS ANGELES, CLEAR CHANNEL AC KOST (103.5) was off 46% and 49%, but only fell in rank from #1 to #2 P6+ and retained the #1 position P25-54.
Snapshot Trends (3 consecutive months, up or down)
Trending UP -- LIBERMAN Regional Mexican KBOC (P18-34, P18-49, P25-54), SERVICE BROADCASTING Urban AC KRNB (P18-34), CUMULUS Sports KTCK-A (SPORTS RADIO 1310 THE TICKET) (P18-34), CLEAR CHANNEL Classic Rocker KZPS (P35-64)
Trending DOWN -- None
