CHRISTIAN FAMILY RADIO Contemporary Christian WEMI and WEMY/APPLETON, WI recently hosted RADIO CALVARY D'HAITI Station Manager ODANEL BASTIA for a week of training. The station is an outreach of CALVARY CHAPEL CANEILLE located in CANIELLE, HAITI.
From JANUARY 17th to 24th, BASTIA trained with WEMI/WEMY station and learned about high quality radio broadcasting and technology. The station purchased his airfare and new laptop computer and portable audio drives and equipped him with Spanish programming.
Station owner CALVARY CHAPEL CANEILLE is led by ODANEL's brother, Rev. HUGUENER and BETTY BASTIA. Rev. HUGUENER originally invited CHRISTIAN FAMILY RADIO Executive Director and GM PAUL CAMERON to visit HAITI and offer training; CAMERON believed bringing ODANEL to WISCONSIN for training seemed more logical.
"The area is a very poor area," said ODANEL. "We have nothing but we are motivated to do good things. We understand there may be a better way to do things. We were trying to find someone who is professional in [radio] to verify what we are doing, make comments and tell us how we can improve." The radio, he said, is the best way for people in HAITI to be informed.
RADIO CALVARY D'HAITI first went on air APRIL 15, 2010. The station is used as a tool to minister to the people in the rural areas of HAITI by sharing Bible teachings, offering music and teachings in multiple languages (such as Creole, French and English), and by developing educational programming to meet the specific needs of listeners (e.g. doctors answering health concerns).
After CHRISTIAN FAMILY RADIO held its fundraiser for station operating expenses in NOVEMBER 2010, it looked beyond its local broadcast footprint. Listeners pledged $2,300 to assist the work of RADIO CALVARY D'HAITI. For more information or to make a donation to RADIO CALVARY D'HAITI,visit www.rcdh995.org.
