Last month, we looked at how stations that flipped to all-CHRISTMAS music showed their PPM strength. Now, we continue our recap of JANUARY's PPM market highlights, compiled by dmr for ALL ACCESS and powered by XTrends, radio's #1 PPM and diary analysis tool.
Boston January 2011: KISS Happy In New Year
After a #2 P6+ showing in the HOLIDAY ratings period, its only month in the past year placing anywhere but #1, CLEAR CHANNEL Top 40 WXKS-F (KISS 108) celebrated the New Year by regaining the position in BOSTON in JANUARY with 10.0. CBS RADIO News-Talk WBZ-A was #2 (7.2), followed by #3 GREATER MEDIA Country WKLB (7.1). Post-CHRISTMAS music hangovers hit CBS RADIO Classic Hits WODS (3.8, falling from #1 to #10t) and GREATER MEDIA Classic Hits WROR (4.1, falling from #3 to #6t).
KISS and JAM’N combined to cap most adult demos: Between KISS 108 and CLEAR CHANNEL Top 40/Rhythmic WJMN (JAM'N 94.5), they had the #1 and #2 positions sewn-up P18-34, P18-49,and P25-54. KISS even won P35-64. WKLB had a huge month, particularly P18-34 and P18-49 where it surged from #12 to #3 and from #11 to #3 respectively.
Snapshot Trends (3 consecutive months, up or down)

Trending DOWN -- CBS RADIO Sports WBZ-F (98.5 THE SPORTS HUB) (P6+, P18-49, P25-54), CITADEL Hot AC WXLO (P18-34)
Detroit January 2011: WNIC Falls Hard; WWJ, WYCD Ascend In Detroit
After an absence from the #1 P6+ position since NOVEMBER, CBS RADIO News WWJ-A re-assumed the top spot in DETROIT in JANUARY (5.7). The previous month’s #1 station, CLEAR CHANNEL AC WNIC (FRESH 100.3), fell to #15 after resuming regular post-CHRISTMAS music programming. CBS RADIO Country WYCD was #2 (5.5) and CBS RADIO Classic Hits WOMC was #3 (5.4).
FRESH fell off similarly in other demos, going from #1 to #10t P25-54 and from #1 to #12t P35-64. CITADEL Hot AC WDVD moved in the opposite direction rising from #9t to #5 P6+, from #6 to #4 P25-54, and from #10t to #6t P35-64.

Denver-Boulder January 2011: KOSI Keeps Its Perch Atop The Peak In The Rockies
ENTERCOM AC KOSI held on to #1 in DENVER-BOULDER in JANUARY, despite losing 45% of its P6+ share. KOSI dropped from 11.6 (HOLIDAY) to 6.4 post-CHRISTMAS music. CLEAR CHANNEL Triple A KBCO was #2 (5.1) and EMF Contemporary Christian KLDV followed up a big HOLIDAY month with another one, jumping up from #6 to #3 (5.0).
Though KOSI only dropped one position in rank P25-54 (from #1 to #2), its 51% share loss in JANUARY dropped it almost 2 ½ share points below its three-book average, while every other station in the top 5 posted numbers for the month above their three-book averages. Still, KOSI’s share was higher than what the station had pre-CHRISTMAS music in NOVEMBER. WILKS Hot AC KIMN, which was ahead of KOSI in NOVEMBER, came back strong in JANUARY, just a half share behind KOSI P25-54.

While it is too soon to tell how the re-branded FRESH will perform moving forward, it is relatively better off now than it had been in the final month of its previous incarnation as SOFT ROCK 102.5, posting higher shares and ranks in JANUARY than it had in NOVEMBER.
