With the usual Congressional panelists staying home this year as the JACK ABRAMOFF lobbying scandal remains a hot topic, the NAB's annual Congressional Breakfast became the "WASHINGTON Policy and Politics Breakfast" this year. Pundit and ROLL CALL columnist STUART ROTHENBERG told MONDAY's breakfast meeting that "we are in a very crucial political environment" with control of Congress and the Senate at stake in NOVEMBER's elections.
"The mood out there is foul," ROTHENBERG said, noting that the President's low approval ratings aren't as low as Congress' ratings. "They're going to vote for change," he asserted, predicting Democratic gains and calling the House "in play" although he added that change of control is "not inevitable," with the GOP strategy likely to try to keep the elections "localized" rather than allow it to be a referendum on President BUSH and Congress in general.
