PHIL WALDEN, founder of CAPRICORN RECORDS, died at his home SUNDAY, after a long battle with cancer. He was 66. Through the 1970's, the label, based in MACON, GA was home to a number of successful "Southern Rock" bands including the ALLMAN BROTHERS, WET WILLIE and MARSHALL TUCKER.
In the 1970's, then-GOVERNOR JIMMY CARTER received financial backing from WALDEN during his run for the presidency. In a statement today, CARTER said he and his wife ROSALYNN were sad to hear of WALDEN's death, adding, "PHIL was one of the pre-eminent producers of great music in America. His many performing partners, including OTIS REDDING and the ALLMAN BROTHERS, helped to put MACON and GEORGIA on the musical map of the world."
