NASSAU BROADCASTING AC WAFY KEY 103.1)/FREDERICK, MD afternooner DAN STEVENS has announced his retirement after 17 years in the business. STEVENS, who began his career at KEY 103 as a weekend DJ shortly after the station launched, will call it a career after his shift ends on THURSDAY, MARCH 17th.
"Even before I met DAN in person,I knew that he was someone special," original station owner BARBARA MARMET recalled. "From his early days making traffic reports throughout the area, to his years as the most-recognized face and voice of KEY 103, DAN has always cared deeply about the FREDERICK community and its needs. That is what made him such a valued part of local radio and I know he will be sorely missed."
"DAN is part of FREDERICK and always will be," PD DAVE GUNNING said. "He’s always the first on staff to offer his time to help local causes or emcee charity, community and school functions, or even just help others around the office. DAN is everything you can’t teach about being a great broadcaster and public servant."
"Radio isn’t about achieving a certain status or title, or how much money you make," STEVENS said. "It’s the people you touch, the fun you have. It’s a labor of love ... In fact, I could never leave completely. I’ll still be helping out on a part-time basis in whatever way I can."
STEVENS submitted his resignation after becoming a father for the first time in DECEMBER. "To spend every day raising your child is an opportunity most folks will never have," he said. "It's taken years of planning, scrimping, saving and going without many things to make it possible. My heart is heavy to not be at KEY 103 everyday anymore; it would take something as joyous as a baby girl to drag me away."
