At NAB2006's "How 2B Cool in the N3w T3ch Age" panel MONDAY afternoon (4/24), AKAMAI's BILL WHEATON predicted that 2006 will be a "tipping point in digital media," citing the widespread adoption and availability of broadband and the adoption of new devices to accelerate the general public's use of the new media.
CLEAR CHANNEL's BRIAN PARSONS agreed that radio's P1s have moved to the Net and mobile phones but downplayed the effectiveness of "community" sites like MYSPACE, asserting that radio has a more loyal base and targets the music and lifestyle preferences of users better. PARSONS noted that the mobile phone is "the core media device for the emerging 12-24 demographic" but reminded radio that "you can stream to cell phones" and can send targeted ads to phones as well, something offered by panelist IVAN BRAIKER's HIPCRICKET text message marketing firm.
